Wazamazama Katatu, an aspiring independent candidate for Kasungu North West Constituency, on Friday hosted a half-million kwacha football bonanza at Kavizinde Primary School Ground in Chisinga, as part of his efforts to promote youth development through sports.

Katatu described the initiative as a key step in his broader plan to nurture local talent and strengthen community engagement ahead of the upcoming elections. He emphasized the role of sports in building opportunities for the youth.

“We need to nurture local talent in sports, particularly football, and support women with skills to reach their potential,” said Katatu.

Beyond sports, Katatu outlined major priorities for the constituency, including healthcare, road infrastructure, and agriculture. He noted that many health facilities remain under-resourced and pledged to improve access to medical services through upgrades and the construction of new health centers.

“We’ve seen a decline in service delivery, and many hospitals are under-equipped. My plan is to bring healthcare services closer to the people,” he said.

On infrastructure, Katatu highlighted the poor condition of roads in the area, stressing the need for long-term investment in tarmacking and seasonal maintenance.

“We need to upgrade this main road to tarmac. It’s a big project, but it’s critical for our development,” he added.

Agriculture, the backbone of the local economy, is also central to his agenda. Katatu pledged to promote crop diversification, construct irrigation dams, and strengthen veterinary services to boost farmers’ productivity.

Meanwhile, sports analyst Gabriel Moyo, popularly known as Akantolola, applauded the initiative, describing the bonanza as a timely intervention for youth development.

“We have talented football players, but what we need is to develop their skills. With the right support, I believe we can unlock that potential,” Moyo said.

The football bonanza is widely viewed as a strategic effort by Katatu to connect with voters and demonstrate his commitment to grassroots development as the campaign period nears its conclusion.
