Kasunda Leads Malawi Delegation in High-Level Trade Talks with Guangdong Province
Jani Grey Kasunda, the 2030 presidential candidate of Malawi and leader of The People’s Revolution, has led a Malawian delegation to a high-level economic and trade cooperation symposium hosted by the Guangdong Provincial Council for the Promotion of Trade with Russia in Guangzhou, China.

The June 11, 2026 meeting brought together representatives from Malawi, Malaysia and leading Chinese institutions to explore opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, cultural exchanges and infrastructure development.
During the symposium, Kasunda presented Malawi’s economic outlook and highlighted the country’s vast investment opportunities in agriculture, mining, energy, tourism and digitalization.
He said Malawi, popularly known as the “Warm Heart of Africa”, enjoys political stability and offers significant untapped potential despite facing economic challenges. Kasunda noted that agriculture remains the backbone of the country’s economy and emphasized the need for investment in modern processing plants, irrigation systems and cold-chain logistics to tap into growing international demand.

He also showcased the country’s mineral wealth, citing the Kasiya Project, which hosts world-class rutile and graphite deposits containing heavy rare earth elements critical for electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.
Kasunda further highlighted the importance of the Mpatamanga Hydropower Station project, which is expected to boost electricity generation and support Malawi’s ambition of achieving 1,000 megawatts of installed capacity by 2030.
Addressing the gathering, Kasunda pledged that if elected President in 2030, he would work towards making Malawi one of Southern Africa’s most business-friendly and transparent investment destinations while safeguarding the interests of international investors.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from the Guangdong Provincial Council for the Promotion of Trade with Russia, representatives from Malaysia, Guangzhou Bi’an Information Technology Company and executives from Gonggong News Agency.

According to Executive President Zhang Guangjian, the council is ready to extend its trade facilitation experience to Malawi and provide support in areas such as procurement matchmaking, trade settlement, legal consultation and business exchange programmes.
The symposium concluded with participants reaching preliminary cooperation intentions in agricultural processing, mineral resource development, digital infrastructure and media cooperation.
The meeting is expected to strengthen economic ties between Malawi and China while opening new avenues for investment and trade cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.
