In a powerful demonstration of civic responsibility and inter-agency collaboration, over 25 officers from the Mzuzu Regional Immigration Office teamed up with Mzuzu City Council staff on Friday for a city-wide clean-up exercise along the bustling M1 Road.

The activity, held under the theme “Keeping Mzuzu City Clean”, focused on the stretch between Standard Bank Katoto Branch and the Shoprite Roundabout, one of the city’s busiest corridors.

Speaking during the exercise, Sergeant Salatiel Bangula – Sanitation Officer at Regional Immigration Office for the North said the department responded positively to a request from the city council to support its ongoing sanitation campaign.

“We received an invitation from Mzuzu City Council to be part of this cleaning initiative, and we were glad to participate,” he said. “We started at the Katoto branch of Standard Bank and are working our way to the Shoprite roundabout.”

He emphasized that keeping the city clean is not just the responsibility of the council but requires collective efforts from all institutions and residents.

“This is a call to action. We are urging other institutions—public and private—to take part in such exercises. A clean city prevents diseases and creates a healthier, more welcoming environment for everyone,” said Bangula.

The initiative drew praise from members of the public. Augustine Atom Harawa, a resident of Mzuzu, commended the Immigration Department for its leadership and proactive stance.

“First of all, let me commend the leadership of Mzuzu Immigration for accepting the call from the City Council. This is a good gesture—helping clean our city—and a wake-up call to other government and private institutions to support such efforts,” Harawa said.

“It shouldn’t just be in the city center. We need to extend these clean-up efforts to communities like Zolozolo, Chibavi, Mchengautuwa, Luwinga, and others. It’s everyone’s responsibility to take part in keeping Mzuzu clean. So thank you, Mzuzu Immigration, for a job well done.”

Mzuzu City Council has been actively organizing clean-up exercises in various parts of the city, aiming to improve sanitation, reduce litter, and raise awareness about environmental hygiene.

The collaboration has inspired hope among residents and set an example for how institutions can work together for the common good.
