Constitutional Conference Concludes with Call for Continued Debate
Attorney General (AG) Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, SC, has urged legal professionals and experts to continue engaging in debates and discussions on constitutional matters to help shape a better Malawi.
Nyirenda made the call at the close of a two-day constitutional conference held in Blantyre, jointly organized by the Malawi Law Society (MLS) and the University of Malawi (UNIMA).
The conference, held from May 26–27, 2025, focused on evaluating the Malawi Constitution’s impact on the country’s political, social, and economic development.
Describing the conference as timely, Nyirenda said it provided an opportunity to reflect on the constitution’s successes, amendments, shortcomings, and the criticisms surrounding its implementation.
He noted that various laws affecting the constitution were discussed, and several resolutions were made. According to Nyirenda, the constitution is meant to serve the people in all facets of life, and the insights from the deliberations would help strengthen the country’s legal framework and align it with the aspirations of the general public.
MLS President Davis Njobvu added that the implementation of the conference’s resolutions would ultimately depend on the will of the majority of Malawians.
He echoed the Attorney General’s sentiments, encouraging continuous dialogue among legal professionals and experts to promote constitutional refinement, national development, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
