Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI) has called on government for accountability and transparency on K400 million for repatriation of 50 enslaved women in Oman in the Middle East.
In a letter signed by the organisations Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa , CDEDI states that it has information that the MK400 meant for the rescue on the enslaved women was included in the MK 2 billion budget the cabinet approved for the Department of Disaster and Management Affairs ( DODMA).
“CDEDI has also reliably been informed that some officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the money in the pretext that they will travel to Oman to rescue the suffering daughters of mother Malawi but to date no one has been rescued,” reads the statement in part.
The organisation has since questioned on Government why it has not treated the issue with the emergency it needs as almost two months have passed now since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it had secured 50 air tickets for the return of the enslaved women.
Meanwhile CDEDI has written minister of foreign Affairs Nacy Tembo demanding an explanation on the matter.
“Basically we would like Government to come out in the open on what it is doing about the plight of the women trapped in Slavery in Oman. We seek transparency and accountability on the MK 400 million that was earmarked to being back home the enslaved women and the 50 air tickets the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said has purchased for the women to be flown back home,” demands CDEDI in the statement.
CDEDI also demands an explanation from the Department of Disaster Management Affairs ( DODMA) regarding the MK 400 million included in its allocation for the repatriating of enslaved women.
