Mzuzu Fans Demand Urgent Stadium Renovation, Threaten Peaceful Demonstrations
Football lovers in Mzuzu have threatened to stage peaceful demonstrations against the Mzuzu City Council over delays in rehabilitating Mzuzu City Stadium ahead of the 2026 FDH Premier League season.
Random interviews conducted across the city reveal growing frustration among residents, who say they are unhappy that their only top-flight team is being forced to play outside Mzuzu. The fans are now demanding answers from the city’s leadership.
Leading the planned protests, James Chisomo Kamanga said preparations are underway to mobilize supporters for a peaceful march aimed at compelling the Mayor to explain why the stadium remains in a dilapidated state despite repeated calls from stakeholders and the Football Association of Malawi for urgent maintenance.
“We are organizing a peaceful demonstration to push the council into action. It is unacceptable that the stadium is still in such a poor condition when the season is about to start,” said Kamanga.
Echoing similar concerns, Moyale Barracks supporter Monica Malefula said the relocation of matches is a burden to fans, especially amid rising transport costs.
“Most supporters cannot afford to travel to Rumphi to watch games. This is unfair to the fans and the team,” she said.

Efforts to get a comment from Mzuzu City Council spokesperson McDonald Gondwe proved futile, as his phone went unanswered.
Mzuzu-based Moyale Barracks have registered Mzuzu Stadium as their home ground, with Rumphi Stadium listed as their alternative venue.
The 2026 Malawi football season is set to kick off on April 18 with the Charity Shield at Bingu National Stadium, featuring Mighty Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.
