Government to Construct Modern Vigwagwa Market in Mzuzu

Government has announced that construction of a modern double-storey market at Vigwagwa in will commence in May, as part of efforts to improve urban trading infrastructure.
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, , said a contractor is expected to move on site next month following the completion of final project preparations.
Phiri made the remarks during a site visit near Vigwagwa Market, where he engaged stakeholders on the planned development under the TRADE Programme.
He said the project is aimed at modernising trading facilities and creating a better working environment for small-scale traders, in line with government’s broader development agenda.
The minister further disclosed that the initially proposed site was abandoned after technical assessments revealed it was too close to , raising safety concerns for aircraft operations.

Phiri added that government is adopting a demand-driven approach to ensure development projects respond to the needs of communities, including improvements to key infrastructure such as the city’s ring road.
Mzuzu City Council Chief Executive Officer, , welcomed the initiative, saying the new market will help decongest existing trading spaces and improve business conditions for vendors.
