Fuel Prices Surge Again as Global Tensions Bite Malawi Economy
By Dean Chisambo………..
Malawians are set to face increased transport and commodity costs following a sharp rise in fuel prices announced by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA), effective April 1, 2026.
In a statement released last night and signed by MERA Board Chairperson Lucas Kondowe, petrol has jumped from K4,965 to K6,972 per litre, while diesel has risen from K4,945 to K6,687 per litre.
The adjustment represents a significant increase, with petrol rising by about K34 per K100 and diesel by K35 per K100, intensifying pressure on households and businesses already grappling with high living costs.
This marks the second fuel price hike since January this year, signaling continued instability in energy prices.
MERA has attributed the increase to rising global fuel costs triggered by escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, which have disrupted supply chains and driven up international oil prices.
