Fire Safety in Cities: Minister Urges City Officials to Prioritize Infrastructure Planning
Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Richard Chimwendo Banda, has called on city council officials to prioritize infrastructure planning that enhances fire safety and supports efficient firefighting operations.
Speaking in Blantyre on Thursday during the opening of the two-day 5th Cities Caucus Conference organized by the Malawi Local Government Association (MALGA), Banda emphasized the need for well-structured urban planning to reduce delays in emergency response.
He cited inadequate road networks and poorly planned buildings as major obstacles to timely fire emergency interventions.
> “Poor roads and uncoordinated building structures significantly delay fire response operations in our cities. Councils must take the lead in planning infrastructure that facilitates easier access for firefighting equipment and personnel,” Banda said.
MALGA President and Mayor of Lilongwe City, Esther Sagawa, welcomed the minister’s remarks, noting that the message serves as a wake-up call for city authorities to take proactive steps in improving urban infrastructure.
> “This call from the minister empowers us to take stronger action. We are committed to working towards safer and more responsive city environments,” said Sagawa.
Meanwhile, several development partners have expressed interest in supporting the initiative. NBS Bank’s Chief Wholesale Banking Officer, Alfred Nhema, speaking on behalf of the partners, confirmed their commitment but did not provide detailed plans.
Other stakeholders supporting the conference include Waste Advisors, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Habitat for Humanity, and UN Women.
The conference is being held under the theme: “Urbanization and Development Towards Liveable and Sustainable Cities: Rejuvenate, Reinvent, and Reimagine.”
