Illovo Sugar Malawi Plc has ushered in a new era of leadership with the appointment of seasoned agribusiness expert Ronald Ngwira as its new Managing Director, signaling the company’s strategic intent to deepen its roots in sustainable agriculture and expand its local impact.

Ngwira takes over from Lekani Katandula, who has assumed a senior leadership position within Illovo’s parent company, ABF Sugar. The transition marks not only a change in leadership but a potential shift in focus as Illovo seeks to leverage Ngwira’s extensive experience in Malawi’s agricultural ecosystem.

With more than three decades of experience in the agribusiness sector, Ngwira is no stranger to leading transformative agricultural ventures. He previously served as Managing Director for Pyxus Agriculture Malawi, where he made a name for himself through impactful leadership in tobacco agronomy, seed production, forestry management, and groundnut value chain development.

Industry observers see Ngwira’s appointment as a strategic move that aligns with Illovo Malawi’s goal of embedding sustainability, innovation, and local value creation at the core of its operations.

“Ngwira’s deep understanding of Malawi’s farming dynamics, coupled with his track record in managing complex agricultural operations, places him in a strong position to drive inclusive growth at Illovo,” said one analyst.

The company is expected to benefit not only from Ngwira’s technical know-how but also from his longstanding relationships within Malawi’s farming communities—an area critical to Illovo’s outgrower schemes and rural economic impact.

As he steps into his new role, expectations are high that Ngwira will steer the sugar producer towards greater efficiency, community integration, and alignment with evolving global sustainability standards.
