SME Bantu Arts and Crafts Applauds Import Restriction on Security Boots

Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Bantu Arts and Crafts has applauded the Ministry of Trade and Industry for issuing a restriction order on the importation of security boots and industrial footwear. The move has paved the way for locally manufactured products of the same kind to thrive.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, June 3, in Blantyre, the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Edward Malunga, welcomed the development, saying it has significantly boosted their business.
“The restriction order has given us an edge. We are now receiving a lot of inquiries and increased purchases from various institutions,” said Malunga.
However, Malunga expressed concern over the challenges SMEs face when trying to access bank loans. He noted that despite having a broad market base, including government and private institutions, many banks still view SMEs as high-risk borrowers.
“SMEs are often seen as risky entities, and this perception results in stringent loan conditions. It hinders growth and prevents the economy from flourishing, even though SMEs are the engine of economic development,” he added.
Malunga further revealed that Bantu Arts and Crafts currently has the capacity to produce up to 200 pairs of boots per day. The company employs 15 full-time workers, with additional temporary workers brought in when demand increases.
