Just a few months before Malawi heads to the general elections, the Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolution Party (MRP) has publicly declared its openness to forming electoral alliances with like-minded political parties.

In an exclusive interview at the party’s base in Blantyre, MRP Secretary General Grayson Mikuwa said an electoral alliance could be the most strategic approach to securing victory in the upcoming September 16 tripartite elections.

“Given the 50-plus-one vote requirement, we believe forming alliances with parties that share similar ideologies is the most viable strategy. No single party can win on its own,” said Mikuwa.

He revealed that since the party’s inception, various political parties have approached MRP seeking potential alliances. However, MRP has been carefully scrutinizing these parties’ ideologies to ensure compatibility.

“We are now officially announcing our readiness to form electoral alliances with any party whose values and vision align with ours,” Mikuwa added.

He also confirmed that MRP’s president, Bantu Saunders Juma, is expected to contest in the upcoming elections. However, in the event of an alliance, the partnering parties would jointly agree on the preferred presidential candidate.

“Yes, we are prepared to contest the elections independently if we do not find a suitable partner. We are ready to test the waters,” Mikuwa stated.

Among the key reforms MRP intends to introduce is the establishment of Senate houses in all political regions, allowing chiefs and traditional leaders to reside and work closer to the grassroots. Mikuwa emphasized that these leaders would also be empowered to prosecute those who abuse public resources, promoting transparency and accountability.

Mikuwa further disclosed that the yet-to-be-launched party has designed a range of income-generating initiatives aimed at reducing Malawi’s dependency on foreign aid.

“In fact, we’ve been engaging national leaders as a pressure group for some time, but our ideas haven’t gained traction. That’s what prompted us to form this political party,” he explained.

Muvi wa Chilungamo Revolution Party is notably the first political party in Malawi to be certified by the National Planning Commission (NPC) for aligning its manifesto with the Malawi 2063 agenda on mindset change.
