At least 19 security guards stationed at the late President Bingu wa Mutharika’s Ndata Farm in Thyolo have gone a staggering 22 months without receiving their salaries, sparking allegations of neglect from the late leader’s estate managers.

The guards, responsible for protecting key areas of the property including the Casablanca residence, Bingu’s mausoleum, and a nearby office, say they have continued to report for duty despite the prolonged financial strain.

“We are working, but we haven’t been paid for close to two years. We have families to feed,” lamented Davie Zabron, one of the guards. “We contacted Bineth Trust, who used to be our employer, but nothing has changed.”

Zabron said the guards also attempted to reach out to Bingu’s daughter, Tapiwa Mutharika, who previously stayed at the estate, but their efforts have hit a wall.

“She doesn’t pick our calls or respond to messages. We are being ignored,” he added.

When approached, Bineth Trust official Samuel Kayuni redirected inquiries to Tapiwa Mutharika, stating she now chairs the Trust. However, Tapiwa has declined to comment on the matter.

With no resolution in sight, the guards say they are left feeling abandoned by a system they once served faithfully.
