On Thursday, 17 April 2025, Chitipa District Commissioner McMillan Magomero officially handed over promotion letters to 466 teachers who have been elevated by the Malawi Government to grades K and J across Chitipa District.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Magomero expressed gratitude to the government for recognizing the hard work of teachers, many of whom had remained on the same grade for years.

“I would like to thank the Malawi Government for promoting these teachers across Chitipa and other districts. This is a great motivation for them and will inspire dedication in their work as they help shape our future leaders,” he said.

Magomero also emphasized the need for teachers to redouble their efforts so that Chitipa can reclaim its former status as a top-performing district in education.

“Chitipa is one of the districts that has produced many prominent individuals in Malawi. It was once among the best performing districts, but in recent years, we’ve struggled. I’m pleased, however, that we are improving — last year, we ranked seventh nationally. I urge all teachers to step up their efforts so that we can reclaim our lost glory and put Chitipa back on the map,” he added.

The DC also issued a stern warning to teachers, stressing that the council will not tolerate indiscipline such as absenteeism and misconduct.

“I have issued a strong warning to all teachers in the district: the council will not tolerate any form of misbehavior, including absconding classes, arriving late, leaving school without permission, or teaching while under the influence of alcohol. Teachers must serve as role models. If they fail to do so, they will tarnish the image of the profession, and our disciplinary committee will not hesitate to take action,” he warned.

Speaking on behalf of the promoted teachers, Nerbert Mulungu of Nachinganda School in Kaseye Zone expressed his joy and appreciation.

“I am so excited, along with my fellow teachers here today. Many of us have been on the same grade for years — personally, I was last promoted in 2013. This recognition gives us renewed courage to continue working hard and shaping tomorrow’s leaders,” said Mulungu.
