Richman Mwandalo, a 23-year-old from Karonga District, has been handed a 10-year imprisonment with hard labor sentence by the Karonga First Grade Magistrate’s Court.

His crime? Blocking the road at Lufilya bridge with water board pipes and stones, then robbing Steven Mvula of K208,000 on the night of April 4-5, 2024.

Mwandalo’s guilty plea didn’t earn him leniency, as prosecutor Sub Inspector Yollam Kanyenda pushed for a stiff punishment, citing the violation of travelers’ rights, especially those using the Songwe Border.

Magistrate Ezekiel Kamtikana agreed, sentencing Mwandalo to eight years for endangering safety and 10 years for robbery, with the sentences running concurrently.

This ruling serves as a warning to those who would put others in harm’s way for personal gain. Mwandalo’s actions not only harmed Mvula but also jeopardized the safety of all travelers on that road.

With this conviction, justice has been served, and the community can rest a little easier knowing that those who break the law will face consequences.
