“Let me be clear: anyone found misusing these funds will face severe consequences, including termination or exclusion from future funding,” warned Richard Chimwendo Banda, Minister of Local Government, Unity, and Culture. The minister urged district council leaders to use the World Bank’s K17.3 billion disbursement responsibly and effectively.

The funds, allocated across all 28 districts, are designed to bolster resilience in disaster-prone areas. Lilongwe and Thyolo received over K1 billion each, while Likoma was allocated K74 million.

This warning underscores the government’s firm stance on ensuring transparency and accountability in the utilization of these resources. Mismanagement will not be tolerated, reflecting a commitment to integrity in public service.

The World Bank’s support is instrumental in helping Malawi mitigate the impacts of natural disasters. The Malawi Climate Change and Development Report highlights the country’s increasing vulnerability to climate-related disasters, which threaten lives, livelihoods, and the economy.

Proper management of these funds is critical to ensuring they deliver the intended benefits to affected communities. The government’s focus on accountability and transparency is a positive step toward this goal.

As district councils implement their disaster management plans, they must prioritize transparency, accountability, and community engagement. These principles will ensure the World Bank’s funds are used efficiently and effectively to build resilience and safeguard Malawi’s future.
