A Blantyre-based youth charity group named We Are One on Tuesday extended support to a 21-year-old physically challenged boy who has lived with a disability since birth and resides with his elderly parents who struggle to meet his daily needs due to poverty.

The boy, Japhet Albert Phiri Moyo, is the son of 76-year-old Richard Katikafwe Moyo and 75-year-old Asalanji Moyo. The family lives in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Machinjiri, under Village Headman Mbayani, near Blantyre Railways in Blantyre City.

During the handover ceremony, We Are One donated assorted items including a bag of maize flour (used for preparing nsima), five liters of cooking oil, sugar, soap, and other necessities, with an estimated total value of over K300,000.

Speaking at the event, We Are One Chairperson Isaiah Right urged the public to be proactive in identifying and assisting those in need rather than waiting for them to ask for help.

“There are many people out there who lack timely support from well-wishers. We shouldn’t wait for the needy to come forward. Instead, let us go into communities and find them. Malawi is a country deeply affected by poverty,” Right said.

In her remarks, Japhet’s mother, Asalanji Moyo, expressed deep gratitude to the group, citing the many challenges she and her husband face in meeting their son’s basic needs.

“As you know, our country is currently going through economic hardships. Your visit is timely and appreciated. We could not afford many of the things needed to properly support our child, Japhet,” she said.

We Are One was established in 2012 with the aim of uniting capable youth to support those in need within their communities.
