UDF Withdraws MCP Invitation Amid Public Outcry
The United Democratic Front (UDF) has reversed its decision to invite the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) to its elective conference, following intense backlash from supporters who vehemently oppose any association with the MCP, labeling it the “party of darkness and death”.
The U-turn comes after UDF members expressed outrage and disappointment on social media, threatening to stone party leaders Lilian Patel and Aisha Mambo Adams if they proceeded with the invitation.
National Publicity Secretary Yusuf Mwawa confirmed that the party has rescinded its earlier decision, citing respect for its members’ views.
Aisha Mambo Adams, who had resigned as Convention Chair on Friday, has resumed her position, indicating that the UDF elective conference will proceed as scheduled next week.
Supporters have praised the UDF for listening to their concerns, emphasizing the importance of internal consultation and democracy within the party.
The development highlights the complexities of Malawian politics and the sensitivity surrounding party alliances and affiliations.
