Two drown in Lunyina river in Rumphi
Two people have drowned in Lunyina river in Rumphi on June 23 2023.
They have been identified as Jonas Mhango, aged 2 of Nyamuhendi Village under Traditional Authority Mwahenga and Harriet Munthali, 61, of Chikhutu village under Traditional Authority Chisovya in the district.
Mhango(now deceased ) left home together with his 4 year brother and went to the said river to play along the river bank.
Whilst playing,he accidentally slipped and fell into the water and his brother immediately rushed and informed his mother about the incident.
The mother together with community members rushed to the river but unfortunately they found him already unconscious.
The matter was reported to Chinyolo Police Unit who together with medical personnel from Mzokoto Health centre visited the scene.
Postmortem results showed that death was due to suffocation following drowning.
In a related incident, Harriet Munthali who was believed to be mentally challenged went to unknown place on June 20 this year around 0800hrs.
Her relatives tried to search for her but to no avail and the matter was reported to Chinyolo Police Unit.
Unfortunately, she was found dead and floating by herdsman on Thursday June 23.
Police officers and same medical personnel from Mzokoto Health Centre visited the scene and after postmortem, the results showed that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning.
The police in the district are appealing to community members to be checking movements of their kids as well as mentally challenged people to avoid similar incident.
