PPM President Emphasizes Agriculture as Key to Malawi’s Development
People’s Progressive Movement (PPM) President Mark Katsonga Phiri has emphasized that prioritizing agriculture is essential for achieving meaningful development in Malawi.
Phiri made the remarks in Blantyre during the launch of the party’s manifesto ahead of the September general elections.
He expressed concern that Malawi continues to face financial challenges despite having abundant resources, particularly in the agricultural sector. He proposed empowering smallholder farmers through direct funding and irrigation support, rather than relying on government-managed interventions.
“If Malawi can fully address the needs of smallholder farmers and provide them with financial support and agricultural expertise, the country will develop within two years,” Phiri said.
A former Minister of Trade and Industry under the Tonse Alliance and current Member of Parliament for Mneno South, Phiri underscored the importance of agriculture as the cornerstone of national development.
Key Highlights from the PPM Manifesto:
- Empowering Smallholder Farmers: Direct funding and irrigation support
- Agricultural Expertise: Technical guidance to boost productivity
- Economic Development: Vision of national progress within two years through agricultural investment
- Resource Utilization: Leveraging agricultural and mining resources for economic growth
