The Malawi Tourism Council (MTC) has taken a significant step towards enhancing the country’s tourism industry by signing a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Africa Tourism Board (ATB).

According to Memory Momba Kamthunzi, Executive Director of MTC, this partnership aims to increase Malawi’s visibility by leveraging ATB’s expertise and connectivity within the continent.

Kamthunzi stated that Malawi will greatly benefit from this collaboration, particularly stakeholders in the tourism sector and the private sector. The MOU will focus on Resource Utilization Efficient use of resources to promote tourism, Marketing and Promotion, Increased efforts to showcase Malawi’s tourism offerings. Capacity Building, Expertise sharing and training programs for stakeholders within the African region and Expertise Sharing that’s the Collaborative initiatives to enhance tourism development.

MTC has already established partnerships with organizations like the SADC Business Council and Africa Tourism Partners, demonstrating its commitment to developing Malawi’s tourism. With ATB’s support, MTC expects significant growth in the sector.

Ramy Waheed, Global Ambassador for ATB, emphasized that visibility is a core objective. “We will utilize ATB’s machinery to enhance Malawi’s visibility, building on the progress made by the Ministry of Tourism and stakeholders over the last four years,” he stated.

Waheed noted that Malawi’s tourism industry has shown promise, contributing 2.9 percent to the country’s GDP in 2013 and forecasted to rise by 3.3 percent in 2014. The National Tourism Policy aims to promote sustainable tourism development, recognizing its potential for inclusive growth and poverty reduction.

This strategic partnership is poised to propel Malawi’s tourism industry forward, unlocking opportunities for growth and development.
