The Malawi Health Equity Network (MEHN) has welcomed the government’s planned nationwide redeployment of healthcare workers, describing the move as a significant step toward improving the equitable distribution of medical personnel across the country.

MEHN Chairperson George Jobe said the large-scale transfer of health workers could help address longstanding imbalances, where most specialists are concentrated in central hospitals while district health facilities remain understaffed.

Speaking in an interview, Jobe noted that the current situation forces patients to travel long distances to access specialized care, resulting in congestion in central hospitals and reduced efficiency in service delivery.

He said redistributing healthcare workers across hospitals and districts will strengthen the health system and bring essential services closer to communities.

However, Jobe emphasized the need for clear communication, urging authorities to fully explain the rationale behind the comprehensive redeployment to affected health workers.

He noted that while transfers are common in the health sector, the scale of the current exercise requires proper justification to avoid confusion and resistance.

Jobe expressed optimism that, if properly implemented, the policy will improve access to quality healthcare by ensuring skilled personnel are deployed where they are most needed.
