The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) is emphasizing the importance of ethical conduct among Election Management Device (EMD) operators as voter registration kicks off.

Andrew Mpesi, MEC’s Chief Elections Officer, made the appeal during a training session for EMD operators in Mponela-Dowa, stressing that these operators represent the commission and must demonstrate integrity and professionalism.

Mpesi highlighted the critical nature of elections, stating.

“Elections are a serious business, and every stage is crucial. We expect EMD operators to operate with a high level of professionalism and integrity.”

He also emphasized the need for operators to remain impartial, avoiding conflicts of interest and partisan behavior.

The training aims to equip operators with knowledge of the legal framework governing voter registration, effective use of EMDs, and collaboration with electoral stakeholders.

Participant Rebecca Thumba expressed optimism about the training, saying it will enable smooth voter registration and respectful treatment of registrants.

The first phase of voter registration is scheduled to begin on October 21, 2024.

As the process unfolds, the MEC’s commitment to ethics and integrity will be crucial in ensuring a credible and transparent election.
