Malawi Congress Party (MCP) spokesperson Jessie Kabwila has urged opposition parties to substantiate their claims that the MCP has deployed groups of armed men to intimidate protesters in Lilongwe. Kabwila’s call for evidence follows accusations by opposition leaders that MCP supporters, wielding pangas, have sought to deter peaceful demonstrations.

“The opposition must present proof if they allege MCP is behind these intimidation tactics,” Kabwila remarked, emphasizing the party’s commitment to democratic principles and dismissing the accusations as baseless without credible evidence.

Opposition spokesperson Shadric Namalomba, however, maintains that the MCP is responsible for the alleged harassment, asserting that such actions threaten the right to protest and reflect “undemocratic behavior.” Namalomba expressed deep concern that the ruling party aims to silence dissent.

The allegations surface as opposition groups and civil society organizations rally to protest government policies they argue restrict democratic freedoms. Witnesses reportedly observed individuals with pangas at protest sites in Lilongwe, purportedly attempting to intimidate participants and disrupt the events.

As both sides stand by their respective positions, civil society leaders are calling for calm and urging an investigation to safeguard citizens’ rights to assembly and free expression. The evolving debate is expected to shape public perceptions on political tolerance and governance in Malawi.
