Jet-Set Leadership: Usi Flies High While Malawi Struggles Below
As economic pressure mounts on ordinary Malawians, Vice President Dr. Michael Usi has touched down in Seville, Spain to lead the country’s delegation at the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), taking place from June 30 to July 3, 2025.
Usi, welcomed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Nangozo-Kainga and UK-based High Commissioner Thomas Bisika, is expected to articulate Malawi’s financial challenges and push for international support in key areas such as debt sustainability and economic reform.
Ironically, the Vice President’s high-level mission comes at a time when many citizens are calling for practical domestic solutions rather than endless talk abroad. His packed itinerary includes delivering a National Statement, engaging in bilateral talks with Iceland’s Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, and participating in a closed-door side event hosted by the Gates Foundation and DEVEX.
While the trip aims to secure financing and forge new partnerships, critics say such frequent international travel by top officials including President Chakwera risks being viewed as detached from the harsh economic realities Malawians face on the ground.
