Inua Advocacy Stands in Solidarity with Millions of Refugees
As the world commemorates World Refugee Day, Inua Advocacy has expressed strong solidarity with the millions of people forced to flee their homes due to war, persecution, and political instability.
In a statement marking the occasion, Inua Advocacy criticized the growing global indifference toward displaced populations. The organization pointed out that many powerful nations—despite portraying themselves as champions of democracy and human rights—are turning away from compassion. “Instead of offering safety and dignity, they are closing their borders,” the statement reads.
The advocacy group condemned the criminalization of immigration and the politicization of asylum by countries fully aware of the root causes driving displacement in regions from which asylum seekers originate.
The statement, signed by Inua Advocacy’s Chief Executive Officer Innocent Magambi, praised the people and government of Malawi for upholding the values of compassion and support for refugees and asylum seekers. It noted that, despite limited resources, Malawi has consistently opened its borders and hearts to those in need.
However, the organization also raised concerns about recent developments involving Congolese asylum seekers. According to reports, some were allegedly misled by immigration officers—moved from Karonga to Chitipa with false promises of transportation to Dzaleka Refugee Camp in Dowa—only to be returned to the Tanzanian border.
“Additional arrests in Mzuzu and the unlawful deportation of asylum seekers to Zambia via Rumphi raise further concerns, contravening both national and international legal standards,” the statement continues.
Inua Advocacy warned that these incidents echo the unresolved injustices of forced relocations that occurred two years ago. The organization called on the government to launch a thorough investigation, hold those responsible accountable, and implement urgent reforms to strengthen refugee protections.
“This is a critical opportunity for Malawi to reaffirm its commitment to dignity, justice, and the rule of law for all who seek refuge within its borders,” the statement concludes. “As global support dwindles, Malawi must remain steadfast in welcoming refugees and asylum seekers, thereby preserving both national dignity and human compassion.”
