Government Orders Immediate Removal of Wooden Poles at Mzuzu Airport Following Public Outcry
After a public outcry on social media, Deputy Minister of Transport, Baba Malondela, swiftly intervened and ordered the immediate removal of wooden treated poles that had been installed at Mzuzu Airport.
The concerns raised online centered around the perceived lack of durability and safety associated with the use of wooden poles in a critical infrastructure project like an airport. Responding to the widespread criticism, the Ministry of Transport issued a formal directive instructing that all wooden treated poles at Mzuzu Airport must be removed without delay.
According to officials, the wooden poles had been installed over a stretch of approximately 200 meters, while the remaining 1,600 meters of fencing utilized metal poles. The mixed approach raised eyebrows among the public, prompting calls for uniformity and adherence to high safety standards.
As of now, the removal of the wooden poles is actively underway. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that infrastructure developments meet quality standards and respond to public concerns, especially in strategic national facilities such as airports.
