Government, MDF, and Kasasile Community Reach Resolution on Disputed Land
A resolution has been reached between the people of Kasasile, the Malawi Defence Force (MDF), and the Ministry of Lands over the ownership of 17,712 hectares of land, following a sensitisation meeting held at Kasasile by the Ministry.
During the meeting, Traditional Authority M’bwana of Nkhata Bay acknowledged that the land in question rightfully belongs to the MDF, based on a map presented by government officials.
“We have seen the evidence and accept that the land belongs to the Malawi Defence Force,” said TA M’bwana. “However, I strongly urge the government to quickly find alternative land for the families who have been displaced.”
The dispute dates back to December 4, 2024, when MDF soldiers seized the land from over 328 families in Kasasile. The soldiers claimed the land was government property, forcing affected families to take shelter in and around a church, using plastic sheets to build makeshift homes.
Speaking at the meeting, MDF Commander General Paul Valentino Phiri stated, “The people were removed for their own safety, as this land forms part of the Viphya firing range used by the army.”
General Phiri also assured the community that his office is looking into complaints that arose during the eviction. “We are investigating reports of abuse, including theft of property and crops, and anyone found responsible will be held accountable,” he said.
