FAWEMA, Karonga Mother Group Inspire Girls to Embrace Hard Work, Hygiene
Karonga, October 20 – The Forum for African Women Educationalists Malawi (FAWEMA), in partnership with the Karonga Girls’ Mother Group, has urged female students in Karonga to adopt a spirit of hard work, maintain good hygiene, and exhibit positive behavior.
During an event held at Karonga Girls’ Secondary School over the weekend the group donated reusable sanitary pads to underprivileged students, aiming to support girls’ education.
“Education is key to unlocking a brighter future for girls and contributing to the nation’s development,” emphasized Florence Phiri, Chairperson of FAWEMA’s Karonga North Chapter. “Menstruation is not a sickness; it’s a natural part of a woman’s life. Don’t skip classes because of it.”
Gertrude Mwiwa, Secretary of the Karonga Mother Group, stressed the importance of hygiene, particularly in light of increasing cholera cases in the district. “Hygiene-related diseases like diarrhea, cholera, typhoid, and dysentery can be prevented through cleanliness. By practicing good hygiene, you’ll spend your time in classes, not hospitals.”

Chimwemwe Mithi, Head Teacher of Karonga Girls’ Secondary School, expressed gratitude to the group for their support. “The donation of reusable pads will enable girls to stay in class during their periods, improving their education outcomes. We call on stakeholders to continue supporting girls’ education”” she said.
Over 100 underprivileged girls were donated with the sanitary pads.
