FAM slaps top flight match officials with ban

The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) through its Referees Committee has fined four referees and one match assesor during a meeting which took place at Mpira Village on Wednesday 27th September 2023.

The committee met to deliberate on refereeing matters in elite football matches which has left people with alot to be desired with recent being the launch of Airtel Top 8 launch match between Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers where the referee awarded a goal to Silver striker while he already whistled for a foul before Stain Davie scored.

According to the statement from the Referees Committee after reviewing match footage,match officials reports and FAM Competitions Committee report came up with the verdicts suspending FIFA referee Godfrey Nkhakananga for four months for failure to control the match between Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers by allowing play to continue after blowing whistle to stop play which gave advantage to Silver Strikers to score through Stain Davie.

The committee has also found Deus Nyirongo guilty for failure to control the game as per requirements of the laws of the game in a Super League Match between Karonga United and Chitipa United played on 22nd April 2023 and has been handed a three month suspension.

Referee Peter Jossam has been suspended for three for failure to control the game and apply laws of the game correctly in a Super League match between Silver Strikers and Blue Eagles on 6th August 2023

Furthermore the committee has suspended Referee Dave Chombo for six months for poor knowledge and application of the laws of the game and failure to cooperate with match organisers when summoned to a hearing as a witness in a Super League match between Silver Strikers and Chitipa United played on 1st August 2023.

Lastly, Referee Assesor Zuza Nyondo has also been suspended for four months for poor report writing as he failed to assess and submit a true performance of the referee in a Super League Match between Karonga United and Chitipa United played on 22nd April 2023.
