Ex-convict murdered, police launch investigations

Police in Nkhata Bay District have instituted investigations into the murder of a 42-year-old ex-convict, Nevious Kacheche Banda, by an angry mob.

During the night of May 13, 2023, Banda allegedly broke into a shop at Chikuluntha Village within Chisala and stole various items. However, before sneaking out from the shop, the owner noticed about his presence and shouted for help until people ganged up and caught the suspect.

The angry villagers, who have not yet been identified, severely beat the suspect up, rendering him unconscious.

Nkhata Bay Police detectives rushed to the scene where they found the suspect already dead.

The death was confirmed by the medical personnel who also conducted an autopsy which revealed that it was due to excessive loss of blood secondary to deep cuts sustained during the assault.

Meanwhile, police in the district have launched a manhunt to apprehend the perpetrators.

Police further advise people to avoid taking the law into own hands thereby allowing judicial system to legally act on the people suspected to have committed offences.

Banda who previously served a three-year jail term on similar offence, hailed from Chinyakula Village, Traditional Authority Kabunduli in Nkhata Bay District.
