Independent parliamentary candidate for Lilongwe City (Nankhaka) Constituency, Grace Chupa, has pledged to make the construction of a health centre in Area 49 her first priority if elected in the September 16, 2025 elections.

Chupa said the facility would ease the burden on patients and guardians who currently travel long distances to access medical services at Area 25 and Area 18 Health Centres. She added that surrounding locations such as Dubai, Area 50, and Mutu villages would also benefit from the project.

Apart from healthcare, Chupa outlined plans to improve sanitation and education by constructing toilets and additional classroom blocks in primary schools. She assured voters that some projects would be funded personally without solely depending on government support.

Speaking at a campaign rally at Zebra, Chupa also promised to establish an Area 18 Youth Rehabilitation Centre, aimed at equipping young people with vocational skills to make them self-reliant and productive citizens.

She urged residents to take ownership of development, saying local initiatives could attract donor support.

“Let us be the first to initiate development projects in our area. We can still achieve progress even without outside support,” said Chupa.

Her message has resonated widely, with many constituents describing her as a unifying figure who is drawing support across political party lines.

One supporter, Mrs. Loness Chikachepa of Area 49, said she left MCP candidate Alfred Jiya’s camp to back Chupa after being inspired by her manifesto.

“She is a woman who has the welfare of people at heart. Voting for her will not be a mistake but an achievement for our area,” said Chikachepa.

Chupa previously served as Deputy Malawi Ambassador to India. She decided to contest as an independent candidate to, in her words, “be a true representative of all people in Parliament, not just a political party.”
