Chilambula Reaffirms Completion of Likoma Island Jetty

Member of Parliament for Likoma Island and Deputy Minister of Health and Sanitation, Charles Chilambula, has reaffirmed that the long-delayed rehabilitation of the Likoma Island Jetty is nearing completion following the resumption of works by the contractor.

Speaking in an interview with The Malawi Guardian, Chilambula said the project had stalled after the contractor, Motor Angels, suspended works due to delayed payments by the government.

He said the outstanding payments have now been settled, allowing the contractor to return to the site and complete the rehabilitation works.

“We are very hopeful that the jetty will be completed soon. It will greatly improve mobility for people travelling to and from the island, make transportation safer and more convenient, and significantly boost tourism,” said Chilambula.

He noted that the completed jetty will have a positive impact on the local and national economy by improving access to the island for tourists and business people.

“For a long time, many visitors were reluctant to travel to Likoma because of safety concerns caused by the absence of a proper jetty. Once completed, it will make travel easier, safer and encourage more investment and tourism,” he added.

Chilambula also highlighted several development projects currently underway on the island. He said government is upgrading health facilities, including the construction of a theatre and a fully equipped laboratory at Chizumulu Island to improve access to quality healthcare services.

He further said the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) is supporting the rehabilitation of roads and the completion of office infrastructure at the Likoma District Council to provide a better working environment for public servants.

On tourism, the legislator said he is supporting the Likoma Live Festival as part of efforts to promote the island as a tourist destination and stimulate economic growth.

He added that he is also investing in the preservation of traditional dances and cultural heritage to ensure local traditions are passed on to future generations while attracting more visitors.

“As islanders, we must preserve our culture. By promoting our traditional dances and cultural heritage, we can attract more tourists, create economic opportunities for our people and preserve our identity. I will continue supporting these initiatives throughout my term,” he said.

Chilambula disclosed that he has contributed K12 million towards the organisation of the Likoma Live Festival.

The Likoma Live Festival is scheduled to take place from 18 to 20 October.
