Chibanja Residents Laud Independent MP Candidate Kaweche for Flood Visit
At least 100 households in Chibanja Township, Mzuzu, have been severely affected by relentless rains that have pounded the area for the past two days. The heavy downpour has caused extensive flooding in low-lying sections of the city, leaving many homes submerged in water.
A visit to some of the affected households revealed extensive damage, with residents struggling to salvage what little remains of their belongings.

John Mubena Moyo, a block leader in the area, described the situation as dire and called for immediate intervention.
“The situation is unbearable. Some households have lost nearly everything, including food. Urgent assistance is needed to help them recover,” he said.
One of the victims, Charles Chakhaza, echoed these sentiments, appealing for urgent relief support, particularly food supplies. Meanwhile, Ireen Biba, whose house was submerged, blamed the Mzuzu City Council for failing to improve the city’s drainage system, exacerbating the disaster.

In response to the crisis, Independent Parliamentary Candidate for Mzuzu South-East, William Chikweta Kaweche, visited the affected households, offering both moral support.
“It’s shocking. People are left without food, and I sincerely hope that the authorities will respond swiftly with relief assistance to aid these struggling households,” Kaweche stated.

Heavy rains continue to batter most townships in Mzuzu, damaging feeder roads and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases among residents.
