The Malawi Government has announced that it has secured new contractors that will be supplying the country with Fuel amidst the commodity shortage crisis in the country.
Malawi is still fighting for economic survival after being hit by fuel crises that have shown long queues in different filling stations.
Government through its minister of information who is also the government spokesperson, Moses Kumkuyu said this as he was addressing the nation that the government has signed other new contractors to supply fuel to the country starting from Monday the 8th May
Kumkuyu said that Fuel shortage has risen because companies which were supplying fuel to Malawi stopped.
“The fuel suppliers stopped because Government was not paying them Money, as such it was very difficult for them to do the work unpaid. But now we have find new other contractors to supply us with fuel and they have signed and we are still looking for others to have more fuel suppliers” Said Kumkuyu
The minister continued that lack of Foreign currency is also a major reason why fuel is not found in the country.
He said Malawi has no good tourism industry which can attract tourist to bring the foreign currency, and the county does not export goods and service which lead to no foreign currency aswell.
He continued that government has no good regulatory framework for energy and mining but the government has put good laws to makes sure that the mining sector are giving forex to the country.
Kumkuyu also disclosed that Malawians are doing commodity exchange with foreigners instead of selling the goods to have forex but they do exchange their commodities with what they want from outside the county and these lead to lack of forex aswell.
“The country is just depending on tobacco and tea to export which is not enough to bring foreign currency into the country” Added the minister
On the issue of fuel price rising, the minister said that the country should expect the price rising or not because fuel price rising depends on the price in other countries.
“Malawians should not expect that fuel prices can go high more than others countries and people will never get wonder if this happens”Said Kumkuyu
The minister bemoaned that the government did wrong not to sign other suppliers to supply fuel fast saying that those in authorities responsible for the fuel were sleeping and they responded very late
Malawians have no stable fuel supplying now it’s two years.
