Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police responsible for Administration Happy Mkandawire has applauded the Global Fund for the construction of additional laboratory and infections prevention ward at Northern Region Police Clinic.

Mkandawire made the sentiments when he visited the project construction site on April 11, 2023.

He said the additional wards will help police officers and their families including the civilian community around Mzuzu City access health services timely.

“This project will also ease congestion at both Mzuzu Central Hospital and Mzuzu Health Centre respectively as people that were flocking to seek medical assistance there will be accessing the services here”, he stated.

He added the project is very important not only to the Malawi Police Service (MPS) but also to the communities around Mzuzu. “We thank the Global Fund for providing financial assistance to ensure this hospital has an infectious disease ward and a laboratory constructed”, he expressed.

On his part, contractor for the project Blessings Hyton Ng’oma of Cheyeka Contractors Limited said the construction works commenced in February 2023 and will complete by July this year. He said the project will cost the donor over 76 million Kwacha.

In-Charge Northern Region Police Clinic Monica Munthali Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) said the project is a welcome development as it will improve delivery of health services at the facility.
She emphasized that upon completion, referral of patients will be reduced as people will be diagnosed and treated there.

“The additional ward will reduce congestion at the facility as was the case before” said Munthali.

“I am happy because as a clinic we are now growing. Growth is always a good thing and we appreciate the Global Fund for this”, she said.

The DIG upon arrival was welcomed by Commissioner of Police for Northern Region Mlowoka Noel Kayira before being taken for a briefing where Mr. Glinton Mitayi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Regional Operations Officer (ROO) Mrs. Emmie Soko Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) were present.
He then toured the hospital and the construction site.
