Airtel Malawi has launched E-SIM card, a service allowing phones to be registered on the network without a physical SIM card.
The service allows Malawi to join the world in the advancemennt of technology as it says good bye to physical SIM cards and welcomes the future with SIM less registration. The service will not only serve Malawians from the hustle of sim cards but also prevent theft as phones will be embedded with the cellphone number.
Speaking at the launch ceremony last night, Airtel Managing Director, Charles Kamoto said E SiM is a digital SIM which is simple and it requires only two minutes to switch from the physical to to the E- SIM card.
“Our customers can be able to assess their devices by simply dialling *#06# and of it in a compatible device it will show a EID number and the next process will be to take their devices to the next Airtel shops.”
Most device’s allow to install up to 8 numbers on the device and this will be flexible to those who travell to other countries.
Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) Director General Daudi Suleman, said Airtel has taken the game to another level where it should be played and that this innovation opens doors to unlimited internet.
“In the world we are living in we need to be connected in everything and one should not be tied to the network providers for buying the sim card for connection including in transportation of medicine in the southern part of the country where it is a challenge to reach people by road as bridges have been swept. Drones are used to deliver medicines and they need to be monitored.
“Globally there is a shortage of ships and the innovation Airtel brings will help produce thousands SIM cards without shipping an innovation MACRA welcomes warmly,” he said.
Suleman further cited the expansion of benefits by saying if one has five devices, five SIM less cards will be required which will be more data consuming, a profit to Airtel, This will mean more revenue to MACRA and more money to the Government’s Account number one.
In Malawi the first cellphone calls were made in 1995 and have been developing from a standard SIM card to micro SIM card, Min sim card, Nano SIM cards and now the departure to the future of sim less connection.
