Two soldiers are missing after the boat capsize in Mulanje

Two Malawi Defence Force soldiers are missing after the boat they were traveling in to rescue flood victims at Mkando bridge in Mulanje capsized.

Reports are indicating that two MDF soldiers and one civilian manage to swim after the the boat capsized and earlier on it was reported that three MDF soldiers were washed away by flash flood at Mkando bridge in Mulanje but few minutes later police officers who are in both sides of Mkando bridge communicated to their fellow officers that they have seen a Soldier in a tree.

Five MDF soldiers and a civilian were on a boat to rescue flood victims at Mkando trading centre and the boat engine stop operating while they were on there way to other side of the river and due to heavily running water the boat capsized and two MDF soldiers and a civilian manage to hold a tree and thereafter swim.

In the time this report was compiled it was known that only two MDF soldiers are missing but hope are there that they are still alive because that have put in a live jacket which will help them to float.

Both minister of Defence and minister of local government in conjunction with Dodma have confirmed about the incident.

Minister of local government Richard Chimwendo Banda is leading a team of ministers who are on tour in the southern region to monitor the situation and see how the flood victims have been affected.

Tropical cyclone Freddy is expected to die by Wednesday this week according to department of climate change and metrological services.

With the continued flooding in the southern region ministry of Education have been forced to extend the suspension of classes from Wednesday 15 March 2023 until Friday 17 March 2023.

More than 190 people have been confirmed dead following the cyclone Freddy which has also forced more than 1000 peoy homeless in the some district in the southern region which started on Sunday afternoon march 12, 2023.
