The Ministry of Labour has pledged to protect workers and promote skills development, while The People’s Revolution says worsening economic conditions are hurting employees, as Malawi marks Labour Day today.

In a message posted on its official Facebook page, the Ministry of Labour said government is committed to creating a fair and productive work environment. “The Ministry of Labour reaffirms its commitment to creating a fair and productive work environment where every worker is protected, valued, and empowered,” the ministry said.

It added that promoting workers’ rights and investing in skills development are key to building an inclusive economy. The ministry also called for cooperation among key players, saying “let us continue working together… to ensure decent work for all.”

However, The People’s Revolution criticised the current situation, saying workers are facing growing hardships. Its leader, Jani Grey Kasunda, said: “Our workers deserve dignity, not punishment,” citing high taxes, shrinking salaries and reduced purchasing power.

Kasunda said civil servants, factory workers and farmers are struggling to survive under the current conditions. He added that his movement would pursue policies that support workers, saying “we will create an economy where work rewards, not impoverishes.”

Labour Day is commemorated annually on May 1 to recognise the contribution of workers to national development, at a time when Malawi continues to face economic challenges affecting the cost of living.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme: “Achieving Decent Work and Inclusive Growth Through Promoting Workers’ Rights and Skills Development.”
