Jani Grey Kasunda has cautioned that some civil society organisations in Malawi are increasingly falling under political influence, raising concerns about their ability to defend citizens’ rights independently.

Concerns are mounting that sections of civil society are losing their autonomy by aligning with political interests, a trend that threatens public trust and risks weakening institutions meant to protect ordinary citizens.

Speaking in an interview, Kasunda addressed issues of governance and accountability as the country moves toward future political transitions. His remarks come amid growing scrutiny over the role and credibility of civic groups.

The People’s Revolution leader alleged that some politicians are quietly shaping narratives within these organisations.

“It is deeply concerning that organisations meant to defend the people are aligning themselves with political parties,” he said.

Kasunda attributed part of the problem to economic hardship, noting that financial pressure is pushing some civic leaders to accept incentives in exchange for political support.

He warned that such influence undermines democracy and silences independent voices, leaving citizens without genuine representation in critical national matters.

According to Kasunda, the situation reflects a broader system in which resources are used to secure loyalty.

“Some raise their voices not purely for justice, but for financial rewards,” he added.

Despite these concerns, Kasunda expressed optimism, saying the People’s Revolution movement aims to restore integrity and accountability in leadership.

He pointed to 2030 as a potential turning point for national transformation and urged Malawians to remain alert, focused, and resilient as the country looks ahead.

Kasunda emphasized that hope must remain strong as the nation strives for meaningful change.
