Members of Parliament have passed the K10.978 trillion National Budget for the 2026–2027 financial year, paving the way for government expenditure starting April 1.
The budget was approved during proceedings in the August House, with Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development, , leading the motion. He described the financial plan as focused on addressing the immediate needs of Malawians while driving development.
Deputy First Speaker of Parliament, , presided over the Committee of Supply, guiding deliberations that culminated in the budget’s adoption.
Legislators from across the political divide—including government, opposition, and independent members—demonstrated unity and commitment throughout the process. Their collective support ensured the timely passage of the budget.
With the approval now secured, expectations are high among citizens for improved service delivery, particularly in access to essential medicines in public health facilities, provision of clean water, and availability of teaching and learning materials in schools.
Mwanamvekha initially presented the budget to Parliament on February 27, 2026, highlighting its pro-poor, people-centered, and development-oriented agenda.
