Police Link Election Clerks’ Arrests to Suicide Attempt Probe
The Malawi Police Service says the release on bail of eight election clerks suspected of tampering with electoral documents is directly tied to revelations from an ongoing probe into the attempted suicide of Clement Chikankha.
Inspector General of Police Merlin Yolamu told journalists at a Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) briefing on Sunday night that Chikankha confessed to fraudulent electoral activities and named other individuals, which led to the clerks’ arrests.
“The suspects were interviewed and cautioned on fraudulently amending documents concerning elections. They have since been released on bail,” said Yolamu.
She added that police are intensifying investigations into both the attempted suicide and the alleged document alterations, stressing that all individuals implicated will face the law.
