FAM President Hails Milestone as Game-Changer for Grassroots Development

In a major boost to grassroots football in Malawi, FDH Bank plc has committed K360 million towards a three-year sponsorship of Secondary School Football, a development hailed as historic by the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).

Unveiled in partnership with the Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA), the sponsorship is set to transform school-based football by creating opportunities for young talents across the nation to play, compete, and dream.

“Today marks a historic moment for grassroots football development in Malawi,” said FAM President Fleetwood Haiya. “FDH Bank has done more than provide funds—they’ve revived the very pinnacle of our grassroots football structure and given every student the opportunity to shine.”

The partnership will also support the establishment of Football Schools of Excellence in all zones, a step that MASSA has described as a game-changer in nurturing disciplined and skilled young athletes.

Haiya extended his appreciation to MASSA, calling them a “strategic partner whose dedication to grassroots football continues to inspire.” He added, “We deeply appreciate the great work you do across the country.”

The FAM president further highlighted that the sponsorship aligns seamlessly with the association’s broader vision:
“At FAM, we believe that a player must be wholesomely developed, both academically and on the pitch. This support from FDH Bank fits perfectly into our Grassroots Football Strategy and Player Export Strategy.”

As excitement grows among schools, coaches, and aspiring footballers, Haiya emphasized the long-term impact:
“Together with FDH Bank and MASSA, we are building the foundation for a brighter football future for Malawi.”

The Secondary School Football revival is expected to start rolling out immediately, with competitions and training programs to follow across Malawi’s educational zones.
