Chakwera is Back: President Returns Home After Productive Afrexim Bank Meetings in Nigeria
President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera on Monday returned to Malawi from Abuja, Nigeria, where he attended the 32nd Annual Meetings of the African Export-Import Bank (Afrexim Bank).
The high-level meetings, which brought together African heads of state, business leaders, policymakers, and economists, focused on enhancing intra-African trade, industrialization, and economic transformation under the theme “Owning Our Destiny: Economic Prosperity on the Platform of Continental Integration.”
While in Abuja, President Chakwera engaged in bilateral discussions with various leaders and stakeholders, championing Malawi’s investment potential and reaffirming the country’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). He also took the opportunity to lobby for increased support towards Malawi’s development priorities, particularly in the areas of infrastructure, energy, and agriculture.
Upon arrival at Kamuzu International Airport, the President was welcomed by cabinet ministers, senior government officials, and ruling party supporters. Speaking briefly to the press, Dr. Chakwera described the meetings as timely and productive, emphasizing that Malawi stands to benefit significantly from enhanced regional economic cooperation.

“The Afrexim platform is one of the few spaces where African nations truly discuss ownership of our economies and push for partnerships that are Pan-African in spirit and practical in action,” he said.
His return marks a continuation of his administration’s focus on attracting investment, improving trade frameworks, and forging stronger continental alliances.
