Renowned Malawian lawyer Khumbo Soko has launched a scathing critique of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), accusing its advisors of repeatedly prescribing “harmful and ineffective” economic policies for Malawi.

Taking to Facebook in a no-holds-barred post, Soko questioned the IMF’s continued recommendation to devalue the kwacha—a measure Malawi has implemented multiple times without seeing substantial economic gains.

“Why is it that, for them, the answer is always devaluation?” Soko asked. “We’ve done it before, and it’s yielded nothing but misery. One begins to wonder whether these people are just intellectually lazy.”

He went further to label some IMF economists as “second-rate” and suggested their advice has done more damage than good to Malawi’s fragile economy.

Soko also invoked history, recalling how the late President Bingu wa Mutharika fiercely opposed the IMF and often dismissed its advisors.

“Say what you will about Bingu, but he saw through the IMF’s nonsense early,” Soko noted. “He mocked their recycled solutions—and rightly so.”

The lawyer concluded his post with a personal reflection, hinting at a return to academia:

> “I’m seriously thinking of doing a PhD proposal around this madness. These ideas need to be challenged in serious academic work.”

His remarks have triggered wide debate on social media, reigniting conversations around the long-term impact of IMF-backed economic reforms in Malawi and whether alternative homegrown solutions are the way forward.
