Malawi, EU Strengthen Ties Ahead of AU-EU Ministerial Meeting
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Patricia Kainga Nangozo on Friday held a high-level meeting with European Union Ambassador to the African Union Javier Perez and EU Ambassador to Malawi Rune Skinnebach, as part of preparations for the upcoming AU-EU Ministerial Meeting scheduled for 21st May 2025.
The talks focused on reviewing 25 years of Africa Union-European Union collaboration while identifying future opportunities, especially in prosperity, peace and security, mobility, and multilateralism. Special emphasis was placed on strategic areas where Malawi stands to benefit.
Deputy Minister Nangozo reaffirmed Malawi’s commitment to democratic governance, inclusive development, and the rule of law—principles that are at the heart of the EU’s partnership framework.
She commended the EU for its sustained support across key development sectors, particularly in agro-processing, climate-smart agriculture, health, and energy. The Mpatamanga Hydropower Project, being implemented under the Ministry of Energy, was singled out as a critical initiative supported by the EU.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister welcomed the recent approval of financing for the Songwe Bridge, describing it as a milestone project that will boost regional connectivity and trade.

“Malawi remains a dedicated and reliable partner to the European Union,” said Nangozo. “We look forward to further advancing our shared goals during the Malawi-EU Partnership Dialogue on 28th May 2025.”
The meeting underscored the importance of strong diplomatic ties and continuous dialogue in tackling shared challenges and fostering sustainable development.
