University of Malawi Appeals for Humanities Funding
The University of Malawi (Unima) is urging stakeholders in the education sector to consider funding humanities-related programs, alongside science courses.
This appeal comes from Unima’s executive dean of the School of Law, Economics and Government, Happy Kayuni, who emphasized the importance of arts in making people more human, fostering social interaction, building confidence, and providing a sense of freedom and control.
Kayuni’s sentiments were echoed by Unima’s executive dean for the School of Arts, Communication and Design, Mufunanji Magalasi, who highlighted the limitations of funding for arts development in the country.
Magalasi stressed the need for arts initiatives to be prioritized in the development agenda, allowing for further research, practice, and growth of the industry, ultimately contributing to national development.
In Malawi, arts and culture play a significant role in the country’s identity and socio-economic growth. The Department of Arts and Crafts was established to promote and preserve Malawi’s cultural heritage through arts and crafts.
The country has a rich tradition of music, theatre, and dance, with various initiatives and organizations working to promote these art forms.
The Importance of Arts Funding
– Preserving Cultural Heritage: Funding for arts initiatives helps preserve Malawi’s cultural heritage and promote its unique identity.
– Socio-Economic Development: Arts contribute to socio-economic development through awareness and communication strategies.
– Innovation and Growth: Limited funding discourages innovations in arts development, hindering the growth of the industry ³.
– National Development: Arts initiatives can contribute significantly to national development, making them a vital part of the development agenda
