Two Nabbed For Alleged Murder In Rumphi

Police in Rumphi have placed in custody two men for allegedly killing a 58 year-old-man over witchcraft accusations at Chagunyuka village, Hewe area.

The deceased has been identified as Chancy Mughogho from Chagunyuka village under Traditional Authority Katumbi in the district.

On May 17 this year around 23:00 hours, Simon Mughogho, 30, first suspect and Chancy (now deceased) were accusing each other of practicing witchcraft. At the time ,they were both coming from beer drinking joint at Thavila Village.

In the process, Simon started assaulting Chancy later he was joined by second suspect Wedson Chawinga 19 who too assaulted him.

The two left him in a pool of blood and unconscious. Later on, the first suspect went to a certain man (name withheld) and told him that they had assaulted Chancy to death.

Upon hearing this, the man informed relatives of Chancy who immediately reported the matter to Hewe Police Post.

The police and medical officers from Katowo Health Centre visited the scene of incident.

Surprisingly, the officers found out that the deceased had a rope wrapped around his neck.

After postmortem,the medical personnel confirmed that death was due to loss of blood secondary to assault.

Investigations are underway to find out more on the murder.

Meanwhile, police in the district are appealing to community members to avoid taking laws into their own hands once misunderstandings arise but should rather seek advice from relevant authorities.

Sergeant Tupeliwe Kabwilo Rumphi Police PRO confirmed the arrest.

“Yes that’s true we are keeping the two at our Police station and will appear in court soon,” Said Kabwilo

The suspects ,Symon Mughogho comes from Kandithu Village whilst Wedson Chawinga comes from Chilikunthazi village both under Traditional Authority Katumbi in Rumphi District.
