A snap survey conducted by The Malawi Guardian has given journalist Alex Banda an early lead in the race for the MISA Malawi Chairperson position ahead of Saturday’s elections.

According to the survey results, Banda is projected to receive 55 percent of the vote, placing him ahead of his closest challenger, Felix Washoni, who has garnered 30 percent support.

The remaining 15 percent is shared between candidates Janet Mtali and Innocent Mphongolo, according to the findings.

The survey, which sampled journalists from different media houses across the country, indicates that many respondents believe Banda’s promises on journalists’ welfare, inclusiveness and professional development have resonated with members.

Some of the journalists interviewed said Banda’s commitment to working with the Journalists Union of Malawi (JUMA) and the Communication Workers Union of Malawi (COWUMA) has strengthened confidence in his candidature.

Others, however, described the race as still competitive, saying the final outcome will depend on voter turnout and last-minute campaigning by candidates.

The MISA Malawi elections are expected to attract significant attention within the media fraternity as members prepare to choose new leadership to steer the organisation for the next term.
