Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds have ripped off the roof of a classroom block at Dzenje Primary School in Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje District.

The incident, which occurred on Monday night, has damaged the classroom and disrupted learning at the school.

Head teacher Luke Chiromo said the affected classroom is used by about 300 learners from Standards 3 and 4.

“The classroom is used by about 300 learners from Standards 3 and 4, and the damage has affected their learning,” Chiromo said.

School Management Committee Chairperson Dalitso Mwitha has appealed to authorities to urgently intervene and speed up repairs to prevent further disruption to lessons.

Mwitha said the affected learners need a safe and suitable environment in which to continue their studies.

Mulanje District Education Manager Enock Chumachawo assured the school community that his office would put measures in place to minimise disruption to learning while efforts are made to address the damage.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of school infrastructure to extreme weather, with heavy rains and strong winds continuing to pose a threat to learning facilities in several parts of Malawi.
